Let’s face it, there are significant challenges that most organizations face; losing the interest of their employees, stress and tension among team members, low employee engagement, high turnover rates, high sick time, communication barriers and/or resistance to “change”.
So, what is the solution?
To better understand the Solution, let’s try understanding the problem.
Let’s take a newly hired employee named Fred. Fred starts his employee journey in high hopes to build up his financial structure and to create opportunities for growth within the company. However, work gets piled on Fred and he does not get the opportunity to learn new skills and abilities, which would support such growth. This employee starts to feel overwhelmed and begins to gossip. He also feels neglected by his leaders as they fail to build healthy relationships and communication bridges.
Fred is also suffering from mental health issues of depression and anxiety. He faces many challenges in his personal life with a negative outlook. As time passes with untreated mental health issues, he begins to make mistakes at work and falls in his efficiency. His negative energy is picked up by his colleagues and the working environment becomes toxic. The workplace is no longer a positive working environment and others begin to feel stressed as well.
Fred no longer sees the value in his work and begins to lose hope of growing within the organizational hierarchy and loses interest. Fred begins to look for work elsewhere, believing that would be the solution. However, Fred repeats this entire cycle over and over again.
What Fred, and many leaders, fail to understand is that the change must occur from within. His perception will change once he addresses the root causes which are his ego, resentments, and fears.
In this situation, Ego refers to the need to have to control everything external in order to meet internal demands. This lack of control is the dilemma.
Resentments refer to having anger towards a person, place or thing. It is a world of misunderstanding with limited perception and is based on personal past experiences.
This may be an extreme case, but my experience being on a leadership team supports these claims. I found that nine out of ten performance issues were more related to personal issues than to work. As a professional life coach, I was able to help these individuals at a deeper level of intervention and the results were amazing. Not only did they feel and perform better but they had a sense of gratitude for me listening and helping. They also shared with others what they had learned about health & wellness from me.
The point I would like to emphasize is that we are all humans and we all have challenges. The problem arises when we don’t try to learn and grow out of these challenges and get stuck in our emotions.
